Rick Peterson began his career in his home town of Honolulu after receiving his degree in Illustration Photography from Brooks Institute of Photography. He initially worked within the hospitality industry, shooting for major resort and corporate accounts while gaining recognition from leading ad agencies with award winning campaign assignments.
Peterson currently resides in Tucson, Arizona, with his wife, Jillian, and their two cats. Rick maintains his photo studio on his four acre desert property where he shoots commercial and catalog assignments. He often travels throughout the region and the country for on-location jobs. Peterson is a past president of the ASMP Tucson chapter, supporting standardization of quality imaging practices through the digital revolution. Rick has won numerous awards of excellence for his work. He is a mentor with the Institute for Digital Media Arts.
WORKING WITH YOU: We establish the photography style & usage and begin the creative process of photographing your product – whether one or two images, dozens or hundreds. If client art direction is requested, we will make an appointment - or you can drop ship merchandise to the studio and request email-proof approvals. Merchandise is insured, tracked, prepped, photographed and return-shipped with expediency.
THE SPACE: Custom built 1,000 square foot shooting area with two zones: a 15 foot wide cyc and a 6 foot square shooting platform for tabletop. When shooting large volume catalogs, we may shoot in two zones and our work flow is a model of efficiency.
THE EQUIPMENT: Canon and Phase One / Hasselblad digital cameras, Norman strobes, Arri & PhotoFlex hot lights, state-of-the-art computer / software / networking.
THE WORKFLOW: Merchandise that is shipped or delivered to the studio by a client is prepped and styled as necessary and photographed either according to specifications or given a custom-stylized photographic treatment. Color accuracy is assured with industry standard methods of input profiles, grey references, calibrated monitors and output profiles to match your print or web based usage. Remote proofing / art directing is available by way of emailed jpegs. Final image files are most commonly transferred by FTP.
THE CREW: We work with exceptionally talented support people including hair & makeup stylists, garment/product stylists, food stylists, art directors, assistants, tech support and set construction specialists.
IN STUDIO / ON LOCATION: Photography that is expressly produced to communicate the client's branding and the product's character – executed on time and on budget.
Rick Peterson's way of seeing the world he photographs has been shaped by his appreciation of the world around him. Spending much of his life in Honolulu, Rick was exposed to a combination of natural and urban elements, people of all ethnicities and richly textured visuals. As Peterson's commercial photography skills grew, his own unique interpretations evolved with every new approach – each stimulating the other. Rick's work has been published editorially and displayed in print, featuring themes of personal graphic style. His travels in the US, Europe, Mexico and Hawaii have inspired impressionistic photographic themes.
“When I step out with my camera, my way of seeing changes as I place subjects within frames, looking for light – form – atmosphere – often waiting for a moment to unfold. I am easily inspired by new places. When I look anew at the familiar, I challenge myself to find a fresh portrayal and to be ready for the moment.”
Peterson admires work of his peers and photographers who went before him – appreciative of their influences on his own work. With a strong foundation of photographic schooling and skills, Rick instinctively knows when and how to apply technique … or break the rules to make his visions click.
